WHAT IS PROSTATE?

When we think of prostate, we think of a disease seen in men, but actually the prostate is an indispensable part of the male reproductive system... The prostate is an 0,4 pounds gland located at the exit of the urinary bladder and its main function is related to reproduction. The prostate, which grows in size in most men, does not follow a similar path in every man when it rises above its normal size. In some men, there is an enlargement of the urethra passing through the prostate, while in some men there is an enlargement into the bladder. The prostate gland begins to grow in men in their 30s and lasts until the end of life. While prostate enlargement is seen in half of men over the age of 50, this rate increases to 65% after the age of 60. With the age of 80, the growth rate exceeds 90%. A significant portion of these patients are followed up with medication or surgery. Prostate diseases can be examined in three groups:

Inflammation of the prostate (Prostatitis),

Benign prostate enlargement (BPH = Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia),

Prostate cancer

This problem is usually experienced by men over the age of 40, and for this reason, hormonal changes due to advancing age and age are shown as prostate causes. Genetic factors can also trigger prostate enlargement, which occurs with hormonal changes. As a result of researches, while benign prostate enlargement is seen in approximately 50% of 60-year-old men, the incidence of this disease in 80-year-olds is up to 90%.

PROSTATE TREATMENT

Treatment of prostate enlargement generally varies according to the condition of the disease. With mild symptoms, the patient is followed closely and some lifestyle changes are recommended for progression. In cases where the symptoms are more severe, alpha-blocking or alpha-reductase drug treatments are preferred. Drug therapy is also the most preferred treatment method in benign prostate enlargement. Apart from drug treatment, two types of surgical interventions are applied. They are prostatic stents that do not have many complaints or are difficult to operate in terms of general health status. These stents serve to keep the urinary tract open. In cases where other methods do not have any effect on the disease, TUR-P surgery, also known as closed prostate surgery, is performed.
