Type II diabetes is becoming more and more common everywhere in the planet. However, encouraging news is emerging about the way to better manage this disease, if any, and the way to avoid it if it doesn´t.

To begin with, it´s worth saying that Type II (also referred to as adult-onset diabetes) accounts for 95 percent of diabetes cases within the US. However, there´s compelling evidence that patients are the key to improving their health, and therefore the improvements they experience are often dramatic.

In an important study at the University of South Carolina´s Norman J. Arnold School of Public Health in Colombia, researchers found that lifestyle intervention focused on exercise and moderate weight loss worked almost twice also as medication.

Jules Oaklander, D.O., a family physician in Miami, Florida, has had similar experiences with patients, most of whom are from Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and Latin America .

“We have to treat the diabetes first,” he says. "This is extremely important. So, we´d like to offer them some drugs, in some cases insulin directly." 

He also advises his patients to exercise. “They only got to take a 30-minute walk every day. They do not need to be a member of a gym or buy expensive equipment for this. They will just substitute front of the TV and watch the news while bouncing up and down for half-hour. Really, this may work.

In his 40 years of practice, he discovered that there was an incredible difference when his patients followed his advice. So, we will reduce or stop diabetes medications, their weight drops, their cholesterol drops, their blood sugar drops, and they are doing alright. In some cases, even weight loss alone can eliminate diabetes.

W. Stuart Tucker, M.D., endocrinologist at Eastover general medicine in Charlotte, North Carolina, says regular exercise is a crucial a part of managing Type II diabetes and aids weight loss. When patients don´t exercise “it may be a vicious circle. You´re doing not exercise; you are gaining weight. You remain unconditional. The load and condition loss make it harder to exercise.”
